The Only Child of Hayes McCauley Poisoned by Eating Them. A little daughter and the only child of Hayes McCauley lost her life in a distressing manner on Friday last. Mr. McCauley lives on the property of Robert Morrison, near Fairmount, Little Britain township. On Friday afternoon while he was at work in the field and his wife was engaged in white washing the kitchen the little daughter got hold of some matches that were on a shelf and before her mother's attention was attracted she had eaten the heads off of several of them. The mother carried her to Mr. Morrison's house and the child fell asleep apparently none the worse after having eaten such unnatural food. Dr. Zell was sent for and upon his arrival found the child to be suffering from the poisonous substance and she grew worse rapidly and died about eight o'clock. She was an exceedingly bright interesting child. The funeral took place yesterday at Bethel church. Lancaster Intelligencer, Monday, May 10, 1897
