L. Hershey, of Derry Church, was precipitated into the waters of the Swatars creek and narrowly escaped drowning last Monday afternoon, because of rotten sills(?) in a bridge near Sand Beach. Dr. Hershey had crossed the bridge scores of times within the last several months, but never suspected that the structure was unsafe. When he attempted to cross Monday afternoon the bridge gave way just as he had reached the middle, and at which point the water in the creek was, of course, the deepest, being about eleven feet deep. When the doctor found himself and his team in the water he kept his head and by good management reached a low place and was able to reach shore without injury, save a complete drenching of his clothing.
