Hopewell was one of the two original townships which became Cumberland County in 1750. Hopewell was first seen as a township name about 1735 while this area was a part of Lancaster County. The area of Hopewell township comprised the eastern one-third of present-day Cumberland and part of Franklin Counties. In 1743 Lurgan township was formed from Hopewell. The Cumberland area of Hopewell remained the same through 1767 when Newton township was formed (subsequently divided into North and South townships in 1929). In 1783, Shippensburg and Southampton townships were erected from Hopewell. In 1784 part of Hopewell township went to Franklin County when that county was formed from Cumberland. In 1797 Mifflin township was formed from Hopewell and later divided into Upper and Lower Mifflin townships in 1892. HOPEWELL TWP.
